Paul tried for a long time

to be what was expected of him.

Then one day

he stopped.

This portrait is painted on wood.

A living, irregular material,

that never tries to be perfect.

Like Paul.

Charcoal traces some lines.

It recalls judgments,

words that leave marks longer than we think.

Wine colors his face.

Like evenings, discussions,

the years that pass and transform us.

Ochre and natural pigments

bring the face back to something simple.

Almost raw.

Paul no longer tries to be perfect.

He just tries

to be himself.

And sometimes,

that's already a lot.
