Faced with these three figures, one question immediately arises: who is the king?

The work provides no obvious answer. No character truly stands out as holding power. Each seems to bear a part of the authority, without ever fully embodying it.

The faces are fragmented, unstable, almost dissonant. The gaze wanders, gets lost, contradicts itself. The inscription “Where is the King” acts as a provocation: is power visible, identifiable, or has it already disappeared? The crown, reduced to an almost derisory sign, emphasizes absence rather than domination.

Here, the king is not an individual, but a wavering idea. Power seems dissolved among the figures, unable to settle. Anyone could be king, but no one truly is. This indeterminacy creates a tension: a silent struggle, not to reign, but to exist.

The work thus questions the very notion of authority: a power without a center, without clear legitimacy, where the royal figure becomes a fiction, a symbol emptied of its function. The painting does not show the king, it shows his absence.
