Doctor: Hello. What brings you in?

Patient: I have a sore throat.

Doctor: Since when?

Patient: Since I swallowed my scream.

Doctor: (pauses, jots in his notebook) Swallowed your scream… very well. Did you swallow just one, or several?

Patient: Just one, I think. But it's big. Too big.

Doctor: (nods) It happens. Some swallow whispers, others sighs. But a scream… that's more dangerous.

Patient: So you can remove it?

Doctor: (dryly) No. Once swallowed, a scream doesn't come back out. It settles in. It scratches, it gnaws. Sometimes it goes down to the stomach, sometimes it goes up to the brain. You're lucky it got stuck in your throat.

Patient: (anxiously) And… what should I do?

Doctor: (smiles, a little too long) Wait. The scream will eventually replace you.
