About the painting
The old horse knew everything.
The fields.
The seasons.
The sound of the wind before the rain.
He no longer needed to look up.
He knew.
Beside him, a young horse was clumsily pulling.
The harnesses hurt him.
He was breathing too fast.
The old one turned his head slightly.
Slowly, he said.
The earth, you pull it... you don't fight it.
The young one listened.
As one listens to someone who has already lived.
Then the old one spoke.
The harvests must be good.
Otherwise, the master will take another horse.
Then he added, with a strange gentleness:
But you'll see... it's good here.
If you work well, my big boy,
you'll get nice carrots.
Sweet. Very sugary.
His breath became lighter.
And the best time...
is when he brushes you.
He closed his eyes for a second.
It doesn't happen often.
But when it does...
you feel important.
The young one said nothing.
He imagined.
The old one continued, almost to reassure him:
Don't worry.
We work a lot, it's hard...
but we are well treated.
We have a good life.
Evening fell.
The next day,
the master came earlier.
He only took the old horse with him.
The young one remained there, tied up.
A sharp sound crossed the field.
Then nothing.
The young one looked at the horizon...
never to see his old friend again.
